ENVI adopted its position on the ESPR proposal

The Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) of the European Parliament has adopted its position on the proposal for an Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). This proposal, introduced by the Commission in March 2022, seeks to establish a general framework for establishing ecodesign requirements for all (consumer) products.

The MEPs want to promote longer product lifespans and provide consumers with better information. Nevertheless, the relationship of this general framework with the new construction production regulation is yet to be fully clarified (notably on the right level of information that is necessary for intermediary product like thermal insulation ones).

The report was passed with a strong majority on 15th June. The final adoption of the report by the full house is scheduled for the July plenary sitting. The negotiation process with EU governments would commence thereafter.
