Need for a binding primary energy target in the EED recast

On 23rd February, the Coalition for Energy Savings – to which PU Europe is a member – published an open letter calling on policymakers to green-light a binding EU 2030 primary energy target in the Energy Efficiency Directive trilogue negotiations. The letter has been co-signed by several other associations, such as COGEN Europe, Euroheat & Power, EGEC Geothermal, SmartEn, Solar Heat Europe and T&D Europe.

It expresses concern about the questioning of the binding nature of the 2030 EU energy efficiency target in primary energy by the Council of the EU in its general approach on the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) recast.

The EED will not be fit for current challenges without a binding energy efficiency target for primary energy, and the synergies between demand side resources and renewable energy will not be fully maximized.
